Jan van der Til
'Jan van der Til is a conceptual artist. In order not to become a houseplant he examines wild plants. Their survival strategies in adaptation, growth and distribution are an important source of inspiration for his work that, like weeds, grows between tiles, survives on infertile soil and invades beautiful landscaped gardens.'
Tuinman, J. de (2019). Garden and metaphor. Do I understand my garden? Groningen, The Netherlands: Rhizomebook.
Jan van der Til has published 36 works, all titled Book (I-XXXVI). Book is synonymous with work and indicates it is a bundling of information that can be distributed, presented, read, reproduced and stored. His artistic practice is influenced by different philosophies about truth and knowledge.
The original of each Book by Jan van der Til is a digital non-physical essence, of which objects and matter in the physical world are imitations. At the same time he is interested in how contextual, physical, technical and aesthetic information of a work can be integral part of the world. His work is presented as a complex of links and connections within a structure that does not lend itself to centralized control.
